CHILDREN'S ARTS & LITERACY FESTIVAL:
SPRING 2009
"REACH FOR THE STARS"

The Junior League of McAllen presented its Children's Arts & Literacy
Festival - Spring 2009 -
"Reach for the Stars" on Saturday, February 28, 2009 from 12 to
5 at the International Museum of Arts &
Science (IMAS) in McAllen.
The Spring 2009 theme "Reach for the Stars" went hand-in-hand with
IMAS'
newest exhibit "Science on a Sphere"
- a revolutionary, state-of-the-art exhibit designed by the National
Oceanic & Atmospheric Association
to illustrate planetary and celestial systems. Digital projectors
illustrate concepts
such as animal migration, hurricanes, and much more onto the surface of
an eight foot suspended sphere.
IMAS is the first venue for "Science on a Sphere" in the State
of Texas. In
2008, The Junior League of McAllen awarded IMAS a $15,000 grant for the "Science On a Sphere"
exhibit which is now on permanent display. |

2008
"EMPOWER YOUR IMAGINATION"
| The Junior
League of McAllen's Children's Arts & Literacy Festival was held once again at the International Museum of Art &
Science. The 2008 theme was "Empower your
Imagination". The festival was part of a yearlong 40th
birthday celebration at the museum.
The Junior League of
McAllen founded the McAllen Museum, later to become McAllen
International Museum (MIM), later to become International Museum of
Arts and Science (IMAS), which began its operations in a building at
Quince and 25th Street and formally opened to the public on October
26, 1969. The International Museum of Arts and Science relocated
and dedicated its new building at Nolana and Bicentennial on July 4,
1976.
The museum, now an
affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, has seven different
galleries that showcase permanent collections, art exhibitions with
fine art‚ folk art and decorative art, science exhibitions focusing
on space exploration, and a gallery space for contemporary living
artists - as well as a children’s Discovery Pavilion that offers
hands-on learning. The museum's next major project is to build a
planetary dome for astronomy presentations.

"WILD ABOUT READING"
1600 people enjoyed the The Junior League of McAllen's
Children's Arts & Literacy
Festival 2007 "Wild for Reading" on Saturday, February 17th at the International Museum of Arts &
Science in McAllen. The Junior League of McAllen proudly hosts
this free festival every year to promote the arts and literacy in our community.
The event showcases local talent and provides an opportunity for the children in our area to enjoy and experience
music, storytelling, artists, and hands on activities in a casual family atmosphere.
"Wild about Reading" featured music by Travis Middle School Orchestra, Brown Middle School Cello Choir, and
Unforgiven Grace - a local band made up of three middle school children.
Children's literature was also brought to life by storyteller Shirley
McCook. The International Museum of Art and Science, Gymboree, and Sylvan Learning Center provided
arts and crafts activities that allowed children to create a variety of artwork to take home to enjoy.
Face painting was also a big hit with the kids. Thanks to Melhart Music, the children were able to engage themselves at the
Musical Petting Zoo where they were given the opportunity to play different musical instruments.
Parents and children were also able to purchase books from Scholastic Book Fair.

"A COUNTRY JUBILEE"

On Saturday, February 18, 2006 visitors of all ages enjoyed
the Children's Arts & Literacy Festival. Over 1,000 people
celebrated " A Country Jubilee" as cowboys and cowgirls of all
sorts and sizes rounded up a good time. Some of these children had
their first opportunity to visit the International Museum of Art &
Science and found themselves with cowboy hats, bandanas, dramas, choirs,
country crafts, interactive stories and “petting” musical instruments.
Performances included those by the Leyenda Production
Company, The Cello Choir “Camarata Celista” and Travis Chamber
Orchestra. A Rodeo Show gave children the opportunity to
experience the art of roping. Students from McAllen ISD who placed
1st in the PTA Reflections Contest, “I Wonder Why…”, were
recognized. Children and their parents also listened to exciting
children’s literature by Dr. Barrera “Hank the Cow Dog”, Shirley
McCook “Click Clack Quackity Quack”, Sharon West “The True Story of
the Three Little Pigs”, and Aileen Everete “The Very Hungry Billy
Goat.” In between story time there were also three Puppet Shows
for children to enjoy presented by IMAS.
While munching on pizza, popcorn and
other goodies provided by Cub Scout Pack 321 and 4 Winds 4H club,
people viewed a variety of art work created by students across
McAllen. They also visited Melhart’s Musical Petting Zoo,
Scholastic Book Fair and created arts and crafts with the help of
Sylvan Learning Center, Gymboree and IMAS.

CHILDREN'S
ARTS & LITERACY FESTIVAL 2005
"THE BIG TOP"
1,173 children enjoyed The Children's Arts & Literacy Festival 2005 -
held on February 19, 2005 at the
International Museum of Art & Science in McAllen. The theme was
"The Big Top!" Admission, as always, was free.
Artistic and literary activities and performances were
continuous throughout the afternoon.
Storytellers, Sharon West and Shirley McCook, respectively presented
"Olivia Saves The Circus" and "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly". Scholastic Book Fair
was on hand, and the McAllen City Council PTA Reflections Contest Winners
were recognized. Raquel Hinojosa of Hinovations Art Studio conducted
a printing press art project, and Marc Sanchez of IDEA Academy conducted a
textured painting class. The Sylvan Learning Center painted faces
and created clown hat and clown tie crafts. The IMAS exhibits were
open to the public, and the IMAS staff showcased their "Hansel & Gretel"
puppet show. Scenes from "Once Upon A Wolf" were acted by
the McAllen Memorial High School's International Thespian Society Troop
#769. Melhart's filled the museum with the sound of musical
instruments through their popular "Musical Petting Zoo". The musical
performers on the main stage were the IDEA Academy Orchestra, the Travis Middle
School Orchestra, the Morris
Middle School Jazz Band, and the Rattler Rockers.
The Hoop Dogs sold hotdogs and frito pies to raise
money for their kids, while the Civil Air Patrol sold cotton candy and
promoted the armed services. Gladys Porter Zoo provided educational
facts and live animals (including an enormous python). Door prizes
were provided by Little Gym and Gymboree. And Marvin the Magnificent
closed the festival with a magic show assisted by two friendly clowns!

"JAZZY TALES"
The Junior League of McAllen presented "JazzyTales"
at Archer Park in McAllen on Saturday, March 27, 2004. Storytelling
was provided by "Mother Goose" and Bernadette Nason - registered as a
touring artist with the Texas Commission on the Arts. Music was provided by
the Memorial High School Band and Milam Elementary Choir "Earth
Buddies". Children's hands-on activities were provided by the
International Museum of Arts & Science through their "Museum on Wheels". |
