Thank you to everyone who grabbed their passports and purses and joined the Junior League of McAllen as we celebrated our 23rd Dias Festivos Marketplace, a shopping extravaganza like no other!  In 2009, our marketplace weekend, themed Christmas Around the World, offered unique gifts and events that placed the world at your fingertips.  The weekend began Friday, December 4th with our kickoff event, Passport to Pizzazz!  Guests learned how to  transform their holiday parties into faraway destinations, enjoyed a brunch, and explored the aisles of our marketplace with private shopping.

The adventure continued Saturday night with our annual Gala and Auction, A Global Affair - a night of celebration and spirited giving at which we honored some of our sustaining Junior League of McAllen members for their outstanding contributions and continued service to our community.

Marketplace shopping resumed on Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th.  The kids came out on Saturday, as Papa Noel made a special appearance for pictures.  On Sunday, there were also musical stylings from around the globe performed by various artists.

For twenty two years, the Junior League of McAllen has traditionally opened the holiday season with its Dias Festivos Marketplace in order to raise funds for the children of the community.  Untold hours of labor organizing this grand shopping extravaganza result in encouragement and education for the youth in Hidalgo County, Texas.  The event would not be a success without the generous support of our Corporate Sponsors and our Auction Donors.

Dias Festivos, the Junior League of McAllen's holiday gift fair, began in 1987.  It followed a long tradition of fundraisers which included: the first Charity Ball in 1938, the first Follies in 1947, bridge lessons in 1953, the first Artist's Costume Ball in 1954, the first weekly modeling at Jones & Jones in 1957, the first Halloween Barn Dance in 1958, the first rummage sale in 1959, the first Millionaires Party in 1961, the first Spring Bouquet to benefit the McAllen International Museum in 1968 and the first Casino Party in 1981.  Our fundraisers enable us to fulfill our Vision Statement of “significantly improving the lives of children and youth in our community.”
